Would you believe me if I told you there is one thing you can do to decrease your anxiety every day?

 

It’s simple, yet a little bit confusing for some. But it has helped me tremendously with anxiety.

 

I want you to become anxiety-proof.

I want you to live life to its fullest.

I want you to be happy and free… not sad and bound to anxiety…  

 

And that’s why I am going to share this with you.

 

One of the antidotes to anxiety (yes, there’s a couple of them 😉 ) is, drum roll please…

 

Acceptance.

 

Acceptance is extremely powerful in defusing your anxiety.

 

Why?

Because anxiety holds on to the things that bother us most.

Anxiety loves to check out our vulnerabilities and hits us right where it hurts…

 

By accepting the things that make you anxious you are taking away its power.

 

How?

 

Acceptance is trained like a muscle.

You have to workout and you become stronger with practice.

 

I want you to start small, with something really small and doable. Things that don’t even have anything to do with anxiety.

 

Hit your knee or stubbed your toe?

Take a deep breath and instead of the usual (I rant for 10 or 20 seconds 😀 ) accept the fact that it happened. There’s nothing you can do, go ahead and accept it.

 

Somebody cut you off in traffic?

Take a deep breath, use caution and accept it. Let him/her go, whatever… and stay away.

 

Acceptance will let you off the hook. But it doesn’t stop there. You must gradually build up…

 

In anxiety:

 

Afraid you might bump into someone who makes you anxious?

Accept the fact that it can happen. Resolve to excusing yourself with the phrase “Now is not a good moment, I’m in a rush, see you later”

 

Are you dealing with insomnia?

Accept it. You are having trouble sleeping. It happens to all of us and it won’t be that bad.

Resolve to tell a story in your mind to help you sleep.

 

Mindfulness applied.

 

Acceptance can go a long way. This is the beginning, but it can be oh-so-helpful…

 

For example: I used to have a lot of fear of being abandoned.

I had to accept the fact that relationships can end and the only thing I could do was to do the best I could to keep the relationship.

 

I also used to fear public encounters, even family reunions. The thought of being exposed to criticism made me anxious, so I had to use acceptance…

 

I accepted the fact that if people want to criticize me, that was their opinion, not mine.

I had to accept that little voice inside my head that kept yelling: “You are a weirdo” “You are such a loser” “You don’t fit in” … and after accepting it, it lost its power.

 

I said: “Fine! Go ahead voice, say whatever you want, I don’t have to agree and I don’t have to listen”

 

I used to fear going out, as I believed “out” was a dangerous place. Home was safer…

But I had to accept that things were not that bad out there, and the fact that everybody is exposed to the same dangers. I resolved to watch out for myself. And everything is fine! I can go out whenever I please.

 

Panic attacks gave me anxiety too. Just not knowing when the next one would come made me anxious 24/7.

 

I had to accept the fact that panic attacks were a possibility. There is no place to run, and you know what I’m talking about. Where am I going to run if anxiety is all over my head!!?

 

There was no need to run. Instead I had to accept panic attacks.

Sounds weird right? Even absurd…

 

But this counterintuitive wisdom will really help you with your anxiety.

 

Apply this to yourself.

 

Take 2 minutes to analyze… what are those things you are having trouble accepting?

 

What are those things that get you all anxious because you really, really don’t want things to be like that?

 

Can you do something about it?

If not, just go ahead and try to accept it.

 

It may not be the easiest thing, but it sure is the path to end anxiety.

So start training your “Acceptance Muscles” right away.

 

Every day make an effort to accept those annoying little things and you will become a master of acceptance.
